Berlin is renowned for having one of the most vibrant street art scenes in the world, so we couldn’t wait to check it out.
Unfortunately, Germany’s strict age restrictions for Segway riding meant we couldn’t repeat our Austin experience. I booked a walking tour a couple of months ago, confident I would be well and truly over this trampolining ankle by then. With my recovery still ongoing, I have to admit I was a little nervous as to how I was going to go with crutches on a four hour tour!
We woke up to the news the tour had been cancelled, which possibly wasn’t the worst result given the crutches issue. Not to be denied though, Google was my friend and quickly revealed a multitude of DIY walking routes with art highlights posted along the way.
We headed off and thought that we were headed in the right direction when one of the first things we saw was a kangaroo perched high above the street!
Before long, we found ourselves in front of one of Berlin’s most famous street art images, the cosmonaut.
From there, it was a never-ending stream of imagery, from the very large:
To the very small:
We quickly learned that looking high and low, in front of us and behind was crucial as there were great images to be found wherever we looked.
The kids had loads of fun trying to be the first to spot different work and we all had our favourite styles.

A couple of the pieces on our map had been painted over, but we were pleased to find many of the huge iconic pieces we had seen online still intact.
We reached the River Spree:
And encountered this great image on the way across the bridge:
We ended our morning with a walk along the East Side Gallery of the Berlin wall.
It was a great way to spend a morning and a real reinforcement that Berlin’s reputation as a global street art leader is very well deserved.
